Kenya’s comedy industry is abuzz after popular comedian Jemutai announced that she will contest the Elgeyo Marakwet Woman Representative seat in the 2027 General Election.
Jemutai, whose real name is Stella Koitie, is stepping out of the stand-up comedy spotlight and into the political arena, saying her decision stems from a strong desire to address the challenges facing women in her home county.
“I understand women better,” she said in her announcement, expressing her commitment to championing women’s needs and welfare.
Jemutai first rose to fame through the Churchill Show, where she became known for her witty performances and her beloved “village girl” persona navigating life in Nairobi. Her breakthrough came after nearly a year of continuous auditions, finally landing her slot in October 2015.
Beyond comedy, Jemutai has also built a career in the corporate world. After the entertainment sector was hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, she transitioned into marketing and now serves as the Marketing Manager at Musti Investment, a local real-estate investment firm.
She will be seeking the Woman Representative seat on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket, the party led by President William Ruto.
Jemutai, who hails from the Keiyo community in Elgeyo Marakwet County, is expected to centre her campaign on issues affecting women, youth, and the overall social and economic welfare of the region.
