The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has ordered the suspension of public internet access and selected mobile services during the country’s upcoming election period scheduled for Thursday, January 15.
In a directive issued by the regulator, UCC Executive Director Nyombi Thembo said the decision is aimed at safeguarding national security and maintaining public order throughout the electoral process.
According to the statement, the shutdown is intended to curb the spread of misinformation, disinformation, and potential electoral fraud during the sensitive voting period.
Shutdown to Begin January 13
The directive will take effect from Tuesday, January 13, at 6:00 pm, and will remain in force throughout the election period. Telecommunications providers have been instructed to comply fully with the order.
UCC did not specify the exact duration of the suspension or when normal internet and mobile services will be restored, noting that further communication will be issued as necessary.
Similar measures have previously been implemented in Uganda during election periods, drawing mixed reactions from the public, civil society groups, and digital rights advocates.
