Prisoner who escaped from a hospital bed rearrested after a month on the run

A remandee who escaped four weeks ago from the Mbagathi Hospital while in handcuffs and being guarded by three wardens from the Kenya Prisons Service has been arrested by officers from the Capitol Hill Police station who were trailing him.

Joseph Mungai Njoki, 19 who was remanded at the Industrial Area Prison was taken to Mbagathi hospital after contracting cholera. He had been placed in an isolation ward at the hospital under the guard of three prison officers.

The suspect was discovered missing on January 6 at about 9 pm causing panic within the hospital.

The officers who were guarding him told police that the suspect who was facing stealing charges had been handcuffed against his bed and it is was not immediately clear how he managed to leave the cuffs there and escaped.

The suspect is set to be charged today for escaping from lawful custody.
