On Friday morning, a suspected drug trafficker was ejected from a Nairobi-bound bus originating from Moyale.

Police discovered 417 grams of cocaine hidden under the inner soles of his rubber shoes.

The suspect was found to have also swallowed additional drugs and is under observation for their egestion, a process that may take hours, according to officials familiar with the situation.

Acting on intelligence, anti-narcotics detectives, supported by the Operations Support Unit, intercepted the bus at the Blue Post section of Thika.

A 24-year-old man was then taken to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) for further screening. Detectives discovered that, in addition to the 417 grams estimated at Sh1.8 million, he had swallowed more drugs than intended to be excreted at the destination.

He was detained and given glucose pending the excretion of the swallowed sachets and further legal procedures.

Police have heightened operations to address cases of drug trafficking, possession, and consumption, resulting in the arrest of numerous suspects.

These cases are pending in various courts, with some suspects already convicted as part of the campaign.

Authorities have pledged more operations in the coming days to combat the menace.

Drug trafficking cases have been increasing in the country, with traffickers often avoiding major routes.

Police indicate that traffickers now use roads instead of airports for their activities.

Heroin is the most commonly trafficked narcotic, primarily from Tanzania through Uganda. Cocaine is also trafficked from these countries.

A new trend suggests that some drugs originate in Ethiopia, prompting increased operations on these routes.
