A camel and several gazelles have been stolen and killed for food from the Sudan Animal Rescue sanctuary.
While speaking to the BBC, the sanctuary founder pointed blame at the fighters from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The RSF is one side of a civil war that is currently raging in Sudan.
Four gazelles were shot on two separate occasions as well as one camel on a third occasion, the rescue center said.
The RSF fighters are also threatening to return and steal more animals, the sanctuary added.
Mansour Babiker Hamid, Chief Executive of Sudan Animal Rescue, said this was the second time the RSF had stormed the zoo in the last week. He added that they usually steal the animals for meat and leave the remaining staff terrified.
“There are four workers at the zoo right now,” Hamid told reporters. “Yesterday I spoke to one of the staff, Santino, who told me the RSF had attacked one of the camels in the zoo. The camel was shot and taken by them,” he said.
The camel that was shot was a calf and was with its mother at the time. Two gazelles were also taken.
“The day before, a different group stormed the zoo. They assaulted two deer and took them away to eat,” Hamid said.
The founder and director of the center condemned the acts as “savage”.
“These acts of violence are putting our animals and our staff in danger. We have been working tirelessly for years protecting these wild animals and during this difficult time of war,” Osman Salih said.
Mr. Salih added that warring sides should not bomb the sanctuary because the wild animals pose a potential “risk” to the public if they break out.
The sanctuary also houses lions.
