In a contentious turn of events, the National Dialogue Committee has strongly criticized Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua for his recent remarks belittling the ongoing dialogue between Kenya Kwanza and the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition.
The Committee deems Gachagua’s comments as counterproductive and disconnected from the aspirations of the Kenyan populace.
The escalating situation is poised to create tension between Deputy President Gachagua and President William Ruto.
Prominent leaders, including Wiper Party’s Kalonzo Musyoka and United Democratic Alliance (UDA) leader Cecily Mbarire, have collectively expressed their dismay over Gachagua’s statements. They have urged the citizens of Kenya to disregard Gachagua’s assertions and remain steadfast in their commitment to national unity.
Cecily Mbarire, who co-led the dialogue initiative alongside Majority Leader Kimani Ichungwa, firmly conveyed that the Kenya Kwanza team is resolutely dedicated to the ongoing talks.
This team, representing President Ruto, carries explicit directives from the Head of State, outlining the envisioned outcomes of the negotiations.
Mbarire passionately emphasized, “As members of the Kenya Kwanza team, we want to assure the public of our unwavering dedication to these discussions. Our purpose is clear, and our instructions are well-defined. Thus, we encourage fellow Kenyans not to lend excessive credence to external opinions, as our focus remains fixed on achieving our paramount objectives through these dialogues.”
Kalonzo Musyoka echoed Mbarire’s sentiments and revealed that Gachagua’s comments were deliberated upon during their recent meeting. Musyoka expressed his concerns about a prominent national leader like Gachagua dismissing the talks, which are fundamentally aimed at fostering national cohesion.
“We unequivocally addressed the Deputy President’s statements during our meeting. Our collective intention is to participate in these discussions earnestly. This undertaking holds immense national significance, and every responsible leader should wholeheartedly endorse and bolster it, given its implications for the nation’s future,” Musyoka remarked.
Just yesterday, Gachagua made startling allegations that Raila Odinga, the leader of the Azimio coalition, had stipulated certain demands to halt protests before consenting to partake in the ongoing bipartisan negotiations.
“The talks are destined for futility. Allow me to affirm this as the Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya,” Gachagua declared candidly.
According to Gachagua, Raila purportedly insisted on receiving three ambassadorial appointments and a symbolic handshake gesture as prerequisites for rejoining the talks.
However, Gachagua alleged that all these demands were declined outright, and Raila was offered solely a farewell package on the condition of his political retirement.
Gachagua’s remarks have ignited a fervent debate surrounding the viability of the ongoing dialogue, prompting further scrutiny of the divergent perspectives emanating from the nation’s leadership.
With the stakes higher than ever, the nation watches keenly as the dialogue’s trajectory unfolds, influencing Kenya’s future unity and political landscape.
