President William Ruto on Friday morning met with US Senator Chris Coons at State House, Nairobi.
The objective of the meeting, as confirmed by the Head of State on Twitter, was to bolster the relationship between Kenya and the United States.
President Ruto emphasized the intent to elevate the rapport between the two nations, focusing on expanding trade and investment prospects for the citizens of both countries. This cooperative partnership, he stressed, would extend to endeavors related to climate change mitigation and environmental conservation.
Furthermore, the President underscored Senator Coons’ acknowledgment of Kenya’s status as “one of the most vibrant democracies in the world.”
“At State House, Nairobi, engaged in discussions with US Senator Chris Coons, who commended Kenya as one of the world’s most dynamic democracies. We also delved into global security matters, climate change, and Kenya’s progressive journey in devolution,” Ruto shared.
Notably, in the previous week, Senator Coons had met with Azimio leader Raila Odinga, sparking speculation that their talks revolved around the ongoing dialogue between Kenya Kwanza and Azimio.
Coincidentally, the State House meeting transpired just days after Ambassador Whitman’s public statement stirred a political controversy. She praised Kenya’s August 2022 General Election as the most credible in the country’s history, a remark that drew criticism from opposition leaders like Raila Odinga, who cautioned against her involvement in Kenyan affairs.
During her address at the Devolution Conference, Ambassador Whitman asserted, “I arrived in Kenya days before the August 2022 General Election, and what I witnessed was nothing short of remarkable. Kenya held, what many analysts and commentators say, was the freest, fairest, and most credible election in Kenyan history.”
In response, Raila Odinga addressed the Devolution Conference in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, rebuking Whitman for what he viewed as interference in Kenya’s internal matters.
“I want to tell the rogue ambassador, leave Kenyans alone. If demonstrations can lead to a dialogue between Ichung’wah and Kalonzo, then everything is in good shape with demonstrations,” Odinga asserted.
