Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua adopted a more subdued tone in his Mashujaa Day speech in Kericho, explaining that he had been vocal while President William Ruto was away on an official visit to China.
Acknowledging his role in the President’s absence, the Deputy President expressed his intention to remain reserved when the head of state was present.
“I was vocal while you were in China for the entire week, and now that you are back, I will keep my remarks brief as today is your day,” Gachagua stated during his concise address.
Known for his candid approach to addressing national issues, Deputy President Gachagua has previously not hesitated to voice his opinions during state events. Past occasions have seen him emphasize the challenges inherited by the government and critique opposition leader Raila Odinga for what he perceives as disruptive actions.
However, on this particular Friday, he chose a different tone, focusing on welcoming the President and expressing gratitude to voters for their support.
Deputy President Gachagua extended his thanks to the voters in the Rift Valley for their overwhelming support of the Kenya Kwanza administration in the previous elections, recognizing their pivotal role in enabling the formation of the government.
“Thank you to the people of Kericho for helping us establish the government,” Gachagua gratefully acknowledged.
Additionally, Gachagua utilized his speech to commend Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot, describing him as a courageous and dependable leader who has made a significant contribution to advancing the government’s agenda.
He attributed Senate Majority Leader Cheruiyot’s efforts to key healthcare bills that received the President’s assent, underscoring his role in shaping the nation’s legislative landscape.
Deputy President Gachagua’s address during the Madaraka Day Celebrations in June showcased a different tone. At that time, he criticized the opposition and the media for their perceived disruptions to the President’s mission to fulfill campaign promises.
Speaking at Embu Stadium, Gachagua urged the President to disregard the opposition’s noise and concentrate on delivering his vision for the country. He further alleged that the media was fueling misleading information.
Despite the shift in tone, Deputy President Gachagua underscored the importance of the President continuing with confidence, believing that the people of Kenya would provide the necessary support for his agenda.
