Police have apprehended 10 people who were ferrying donkey meat from Makueni to Nairobi for sale during the New Year celebrations.

The suspects, namely Antony Kiiru, Samson Kamau, Paul Kabura, Cyrus Nthumbi, Isaac Njoroge, Johnstone Kilunja, Samuel Mwangi, Andrew Kithiki, Carol Makau, and Francis Makau, were taken into custody on Saturday.

This is after police intercepted two vehicles, a Toyota Fielder with registration number KDB 991U and a Toyota Wish with registration number KCK 434M, both carrying donkey meat.

According to the National Police Service (NPS), preliminary investigations indicate that the donkey meat was en route to Shauri Moyo Market in Nairobi, as stated in an official X statement.

Upon questioning the suspects, law enforcement successfully determined the location where the donkeys were slaughtered.

A joint team of NPS Officers and Public Health Officers later visited the slaughter site and recovered 25 skinned heads and numerous hooves of donkeys from a pit within one of the suspect’s homesteads.

The NPS reported, “Other items found at the scene included primitive tools believed to have been used for the slaughter.”
