Police in the US have arrested and charged a Kenyan man after he allegedly assaulted and raped a 70-year-old woman working at the front desk of an upscale apartment building in downtown Phoenix, Arizona.
According to investigations, Brian Kibiwot Chuchuney, 30, approached the window of the Fourth Street complex near Jefferson Street around 4:30 a.m. on Sunday, December 17. The victim granted him entrance because she thought he resided in the Complex.
Chuchuney is said to have entered and asked a series of seemingly harmless questions, including his desire to use the washroom and get water.
She went over to get him water, and Chuchuney followed her, grabbed her from behind and sexually assaulted her, police said. She fought back, but he overpowered her, investigators said. Chuchuney then forced her into a storage room nearby and raped her.
The assailant was eventually thwarted by the victim’s loud screams for help, causing him to flee the scene. He took her trousers and underpants but flung them outside the building.
Law enforcement reacted quickly, initiating a brief pursuit that resulted in Chuchuney’s arrest. When he was apprehended, he vehemently denied any involvement in the act.
Chuchuney now faces three counts of sexual assault, one count of sexually assaulting somebody, one count of kidnapping, one count of aggravated assault, two counts of assault, and one case of theft.
According to court documents, the accused is homeless and has a history of “several” prior offences.
In 2018 Chuchuney was arrested after allegedly exposing himself to two women in the Biltmore area in Phoenix, Arizona.
According to a Phoenix police report, a woman was in her car, leaving for work on October 30 when Chuchuney, allegedly stood in front of her car and exposed himself.
The woman managed to drive away and call the police.
Police say another woman was walking her dog when Chuchuney approached her saying how cute her dog was. He then reportedly reached out to shake her hand and introduced himself as “Brian.”
He then pulled the woman close to him and used his other hand to expose himself, before running away.
Police soon caught Chuchuney near 44th Street and Camelback Road.
He was charged with kidnapping and indecent exposure.
