Opposition and Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga on Saturday, December 30, called for the removal of all taxes by the Kenya Kwanza administration, or else they will call for the return of demonstrations, popularly known as Maandamano in 2024.

The Azimio leader who was speaking in Nyanza has blamed the government for increasing taxes and in the process led to a high cost of living. He said that the Kenya Kwanza government was clueless and their poor tax policies are responsible for the current tough economic situation in Kenya.

“Sisi wenyewe tulisema gharama ya maisha ilikuwa ni juu. Tukaambia serikali wasiongeze ushuru….wakazidi kuongeza ushuru. Na hiyo ndio imeleta hasara kubwa sana kwa waKenya!” Raila stated.

“Tumesema mwaka mpya, hii sheria ya kodi, mpaka itolewe…ile Finance Bill, lazima itolewe. Wasipotoa hiyo finance bill, tutarudi kwenye uwanja!” Raila added.

Some Kenyans had urged Baba to call for the return of mass protests in an attempt to force the Kenya Kwanza administration to stop their frequent tax increases.

The opposition called off the 2023 protests inorder to allow for dialogue between the government and the opposition. However, it seems the talks have not borne fruit and Kenyans should brace themselves for further hard times.
