Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu on Monday led the release of results of the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations. The CS made the announcement at Moi Girls Eldoret alongside key education and government figures, following a briefing with President William Ruto.
From the results, 1,216 candidates, representing 0.14 percent, got straight As in 2023 compared to 1,146 in 2022.
Broken down, a total of 7,254 got A- (minus), 18,078 attained B+ (plus), 36,728 got B (plain), while 78,343 got C+ (plus).
825 male students achieved As compared to 391 female counterparts while 4,472 male students got A- (minus) compared to 2,782 female students.
In total, 201,133 candidates, representing 22.27 percent, scored C+ and above and will be eligible for direct access to the university. The performance improvement was attributed to the new grading system.
Last year witnessed a surge in KCSE examinees, with 903,260 students sitting the exams compared to 2022’s 881,416 candidates. The exams commenced officially in November 2023 after initial oral and practical assessments in February.
During the briefing, President Ruto urged the Education Secretary to investigate why around 3,000 registered students didn’t participate in the exams.
The Ministry issued a directive for all school principals to register 2024 KCSE candidates within the next two months, setting a firm deadline between January 29 and March 29, eliminating any possibility of an extension.
The Ministry further assured the public of the exams’ integrity, emphasizing no prior exposure to examination materials before the official commencement.
Students discontented with their results are advised to lodge their complaints with the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) within 30 days of the release date.
How to Access 2023 KCSE Results
In the past years, the Ministry of Education has been using an SMS platform supported by mobile service providers to convey examination results. However, Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang last year announced the abolishment of the SMS system.
Starting today, candidates will no longer access their results through the SMS system. However, they can check their results through the KNEC website.
- Navigate to the KNEC website.
- On the website, the candidate will then go to the KCSE 2023 section.
- Candidates will then input their index number and registered name to view their results.
CS Machogu has assured candidates that the ministry has ensured the system is working.
“This time we have worked with engineers and experts and we are sure that the website is working. Kenyans will not have the inconveniences we had last time,” he said.
The council will also dispatch results to sub-county education officers for distribution to exam centers.
