Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor has expressed profound shock at the way the brutal killing of 20-year-old university student Rita Waeni was done. Her mutilated remains were discovered at an apartment in Roysambu last Sunday.
Dr. Oduor was addressing journalists on Friday, January 19, after completing a post-mortem examination on Rita’s body.
In a career marked by extensive forensic work, Dr. Oduor conveyed his astonishment, stating, “This is the first time I have come across such an incident. I have never come across such in my forensic life.”
The doctor further elaborated on the nature of the crime, noting that the killer seemed adept, using a sharp object to cut the skin and a hacksaw to saw off the bone.
Dr. Oduor also disclosed that the assailant attempted to remove Rita Waeni’s fingernails, presumably to eliminate any traces of DNA that could link back to them.
Such actions, according to Oduor, suggest an effort to conceal evidence by preventing the retrieval of the perpetrator’s DNA.
“Another thing that we noticed is that the killer tried to clip off her fingernails for reasons which I may not be able to know. As a scientist, when we see this, we think that the person was trying to hide evidence so that we are unable to get his DNA from his victim,” explained the Chief Pathologist.
Despite the attempt to destroy potential evidence, Dr. Oduor assured the press that samples were successfully collected from some of Waeni’s undamaged fingernails.
These samples have been sent for further forensic analysis to aid ongoing police investigations.
While highlighting the heinous nature of the crime, Dr. Oduor mentioned the absence of the deceased’s head and the desecration of the body.
“There was also a desecration of the body whereby someone cut the femur clean off so that the legs were apart from the trunk. She also lost a lot of blood, but this could have been after death,” Dr Oduor revealed.
