A licensed gun owner intervened and thwarted a mobile phone robbery attempt on a taxi driver along Koinange Street, Nairobi. The robbery attempt occurred on Tuesday night around midnight, according to police and witness reports.
The incident unfolded when a duo on a motorbike tried to snatch a mobile phone from the taxi driver.
Positioned nearby, the licensed gun owner fired two shots into the air, causing the would-be thieves to flee the scene hastily.
Expressing gratitude, the relieved taxi driver approached the gunman, acknowledging that the mobile phone was a crucial lifeline for him. In today’s digital world, mobile phones are mobile wallets hence loss of one means loss of mobile money access.
Law enforcement officials arrived after a few minutes to address the situation.
The city has witnessed a surge in mobile phone snatching cases, despite police efforts to curb the trend.
In a separate incident, a suspect accused of snatching a mobile phone at the junction of Lenana Road and Chaka Road faced swift justice from an enraged mob, leading to a fatal lynching.
The area encompassing Dennis Pritt Road, Chaka Road, Lenana Road, and nearby locations has become a hotspot for mobile phone snatching, primarily executed by motorcycle-riding gangs targeting unsuspecting users.
