A Tanzanian national, Maimuna Jumanne Amir, has been sentenced to 45 years in prison for possessing narcotics while traveling in Mombasa. Amir was apprehended at Moi International Airport in March 2021, carrying 5,389 grams of heroin valued at Ksh.16,167,000.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) revealed that Amir had concealed the drug haul in a black bag. Principal Magistrate Martin Rabera of the Mombasa Law Courts delivered the judgment, sentencing her to 35 years for drug trafficking and an additional 10 years for drug possession.

The ten-year sentence comes with an alternative fine of Ksh.48 million. The ODPP stated, “The accused was fined Ksh.48,501,000 (three times the value of the drugs in her possession), in default, served 10 years in prison for the offense of trafficking in narcotic drugs, contrary to Section 4(a) of the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act No. 4 of 1994.”

Amir was also sentenced to 35 years in prison. The court found that she committed the offense jointly with others who were not before the court on March 14, 2021, at Moi International Airport in Changamwe Sub-county within Mombasa County.

Magistrate Rabera emphasized that the prosecution, led by Barbara Sombo, successfully proved the case beyond a reasonable doubt, presenting 16 witnesses during the trial.
