Tragedy struck in Enziu, Mwingi, Kitui County, when an eight-month-old baby suffocated while sleeping outside their home.
The infant was in the house with their four-year-old sibling on Monday when the incident occurred.
According to police reports, the mother had left both children sleeping on a mattress under a shade while she tended to chores on a nearby farm.
Upon her return, approximately an hour later, she discovered the younger child had suffocated under a blanket.
Unaware of the tragedy, the elder sibling remained oblivious to their younger sibling’s fate.
In a desperate attempt to seek help, the mother raised an alarm, but sadly, it was too late to save the infant.
The authorities were notified, and the baby’s body was transferred to a local mortuary pending further investigations and an autopsy.
