Detectives in Kajiado are actively pursuing a human trafficking syndicate, suspected of enticing young men with false promises of employment before forcefully trafficking them to undisclosed destinations abroad.
One suspect, identified as Geoffrey Kinuthia, is currently in police custody to assist with investigations following his apprehension while transporting 90 Ethiopian males.
Kinuthia was intercepted while driving a Canter with registration number KCB 548K at the Imbirikani roadblock along Loitoktok road on the evening of Monday, February 19, 2024. The police became suspicious when they heard sounds of distress emanating from the vehicle.
According to Kinuthia, he was merely hired as a driver for the vehicle and was unaware of its contents. He claimed that he had been instructed to deliver the cargo to an individual known only as Ken in Loitoktok.
“Ordinarily, this route sees a significant number of canters and lorries due to the thriving tomato and onion business in Loitoktok. We noticed that the Canter was speeding and decided to stop it at the roadblock. Upon questioning the driver about the speeding, we heard noises of distress and coughing. When we instructed the driver to open the Canter, we discovered 90 males inside. They were crammed together, with some sitting on top of others, indicating they had been packed tightly like cargo,” revealed one of the officers stationed at the roadblock.
The officers described the occupants as appearing frail, fatigued, and hungry, with communication barriers due to language differences.
