The Anti-corruption Court in Mombasa has summoned former Mandera South MP, Adan Haji Sheikh, to appear before it on February 13th to respond to corruption charges.
Ongoing investigations by the Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (EACC) reveal that the graft in question took place while the former MP was the Kwale County executive committee member for Tourism.
EACC alleges that Haji failed to disclose his association with Lofta Resort Limited.
According to investigation reports, the hotel was prequalified and awarded contracts for accommodation and conference services to the Kwale County Government between May 10th, 2013, and May 2017.
However, it has now been revealed that Haji, his wife, Fatuma Ibrahim Roba, and his son, Alibashir Adankhalif were registered as directors of the hotel.
The investigations further revealed that Lofta Resort Limited received a total of Ksh.51,456,006 from the Kwale County Government during this period.
Haji is therefore accused of contravening sections 42 and 48 of the Anti-corruption and Economic Crimes Act, 2003, for not disclosing a conflict of interest during the tendering process.
The Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission stated that Haji has also been evading appearances in courts since December 2023, following the approval by the director of public prosecutions to charge him based on EACC recommendations.
In response to his disappearance, the EACC filed the charge sheet at the Mombasa court and has successfully obtained summons, compelling the former legislator to appear before the Anti-Corruption Court on February 13th, 2024.
