President William Ruto’s government has publicly announced its unequivocal support for opposition leader Raila Odinga’s candidacy for the top position at the African Union (AU) Commission.
Government spokesman Isaac Mwaura, speaking at a press conference, characterized this endorsement as a pivotal moment for the nation and called upon all leaders to set aside their political differences and unite behind Odinga.
“If he gets an opportunity to serve us at the AU as the chair, we as Kenyans forget all our differences and rally behind a fellow Kenya. If Mr. Odinga has expressed interest, we would rather have him there because when he is there the interests of Kenya are taken care of. We as government fully support his candidature,” stated Mwaura.
While cautioning against overinterpreting the government’s stance, Mwaura lauded Odinga as a statesman capable of leading Kenya and the continent to greater achievements. He emphasized Odinga’s stature as a respected figure across Africa, affirming his suitability for the role.
Mwaura’s remarks put to rest any doubts regarding the support of the William Ruto-led administration for Odinga’s candidacy.
In a further show of support, the ruling party United Democratic Alliance (UDA) pledged its backing for Odinga, hailing him as a statesman and a prominent figure in African politics.
Odinga continues to garner endorsements from various quarters, underscoring the widespread recognition of his capabilities and setting the stage for a significant test as one of Kenya’s most prominent politicians vies for a leadership role on the African stage.
