The Kenya Wildlife Service has disclosed that human remains were discovered at the same location where a hyena assaulted a student from Multimedia University.
In response to protests by Multimedia University students on Tuesday morning, KWS teams launched an operation to track the guilty animal.
During their hunt, the KWS search party however found the remains of another individual who had been attacked by the hyenas in question.
“Regrettably, another (PAMU) team deployed on-site discovered the partial remains of a human being at the scene, which were subsequently recovered by the Kenya Police. The identity of the deceased has been confirmed, and their family members have been notified,” KWS stated in their release.
The attack on 21-year-old Kelvin Mwenda on Monday evening had prompted the students to protest insecurity due to wild animals.
Mwenda unfortunately, lost a thumb and sustained a serious injury on his right eye. Additionally, another student who had rushed to rescue him when he heard his cries also suffered injuries in the same attack.
The two were attacked on Monday night while heading to their hostel around the Maasai Lodge area in Ongata Rongai.
Multimedia University students launched protests the following morning over the attack. They lit bonfires along the Nairobi Magadi road, demanding that KWS address the issue of wildlife intrusion into their campus.
Following this incident, KWS took action, tracked down, and euthanized the responsible animal.
“A PAMU team promptly euthanized one hyena and proceeded to conduct further operations to locate any nearby hyena dens. The veterinary team accompanying PAMU is examining the hyena carcass to determine whether they might be carrying rabies or other zoonotic diseases,” KWS said.
