The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU) confirmed on Thursday that its Secretary General, Davji Atellah, was shot by the police while leading medical interns in a peaceful protest in Nairobi.
In a statement, the union strongly condemned the incident without providing further details. The KMPDU hinted at mobilizing its members to protest against the government’s perceived indifference to the challenges faced by doctors in the country.
“We condemn in the strongest terms the shooting of our SG Davji Attelah by the police this afternoon when he was leading the Medical interns in a peaceful march. The doctors of Kenya have endured enough! This is the straw that breaks the camel’s back,” said KMPDU.
Earlier, images depicting the injured Secretary General surfaced online, triggering outrage among doctors and the general public in Kenya. The incident highlights the ongoing tensions between healthcare professionals and the government, underscoring the challenges faced by the medical community in the country.
