Tokyo, Japan – In a bold address to Kenyans living abroad, President William Ruto declared that Kenya’s future prosperity hinges on its own citizens, not foreign aid or debt.
Speaking in Tokyo on Wednesday, he urged increased tax contributions, highlighting the stark difference between Kenya’s 15% tax-to-GDP ratio and Japan’s 34.8%.
“Our country is not built by others, not by aid, not by debt,” Ruto proclaimed. “It’s built by us, by Kenyans using our own revenues and taxes. Let’s tell each other that!”
While acknowledging the unpopularity of such measures, Ruto defended them as crucial for long-term development. He pointed to Japan’s success, attributing it to the nation’s commitment to self-reliance through taxation.
“People call me names including Zakayo,” he admitted, “but my conscience is clear when I’m doing the right thing for our country.”
Meanwhile, Ruto’s visit to Japan yielded tangible results. A framework agreement was signed with Toyota Tsusho Corporation, paving the way for collaboration in vehicle manufacturing and renewable energy development.
