The Kenyan government has announced that a total of 19,250 unlicensed liquor joints have been shut down in the ongoing nationwide crackdown on illicit brews, drugs, and substance abuse.

The announcement was made by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki Monday, March 25, 2024.

Kindiki further revealed that 14 distilleries producing toxic killer brew have also been closed down, with their production infrastructure destroyed.

“Additionally, 12,150 premises operating across the 47 counties without proper licenses, along with 6,500 others licensed in violation of national laws regarding proximity to learning institutions, have been shut down,” stated Kindiki.

Speaking in Homa Bay County, the CS commended the County Security and Intelligence Committee (CSIC) for their commendable efforts in combating illicit alcohol, narcotic drugs, and psychotropic substances, which have significantly contributed to national anti-substance abuse endeavors.

Kindiki further revealed plans to present new legislation aimed at combating illicit drugs to Parliament as part of the anti-drugs campaign.

“New stringent laws to combat illicit drugs and substance abuse will be submitted to Parliament next month,” Kindiki added.
