Janeth Chepng’etich confidently overcame the challenge from Ethiopian competitors to secure victory in the women’s 10,000 meters race on Thursday night in Accra, Ghana, further bolstering Kenya’s gold medal count at the African Games to six.
Chepngétich clocked a time of 33:37.00 to claim the top spot in the 25-lap race, surpassing Ethiopians Belew Kefale (33:38.37) and Amare Tekan Berhe (33:51.50), who finished second and third respectively.
Chepngétich’s strategic sprint in the final lap enabled her to overtake Kefale, who had led the race in its early stages. Her victory marked Kenya’s sixth gold medal at the quadrennial competition, contributing to the country’s total medal tally of 24.
Earlier in the day, tennis sensation Angella Okutoyi secured victory against Egyptian Abdelaziz Lamir in the singles final, triumphing in straight sets (6-4, 6-2) to claim the African crown. Okutoyi later settled for silver in the doubles category.
Additionally, the national rugby 7s team clinched a silver medal for Kenya after a hard-fought match, ultimately succumbing to a 21-14 loss against Uganda.
