Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba has given athletes tax relief.

Speaking to the press ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, CS Namwamba disclosed that after discussions with the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), the practice of double taxation for Kenyan athletes would come to an end. He highlighted that a framework had been established to shield athletes competing in international events from this burden.

“The issue of double taxation, our athletes have always raised a concern that when they win their earnings in foreign lands, they pay taxes at source,” Namwamba stated, acknowledging the athletes’ concerns as the catalyst for government action.

“I am delighted to announce that we have been working on a framework to shield our athletes from double taxation and we have struck a deal with the KRA and treasury,” he added.

Namwamba emphasized that under the new agreement, athletes would only be subjected to taxation once, with deductions made at the source of the funds.

“The deal from now moving forward will protect our athletes from double taxation so that they are taxed only once,” the sports CS remarked, signaling a positive change for Kenyan athletes competing on the international stage.
