The Mombasa security committee is contemplating the installation of roadblocks at all entry points into the county to curb the influx of drugs.
Ronald Muiwawi, the Deputy County Commissioner of Mombasa, disclosed on Monday that the county has become a hub for drug trafficking, with international drug syndicates using it both as a destination and a dumping ground for narcotics.
“Many times, residents of Mombasa are found to be users of drugs. However, the majority of these drugs originate from outside the county,” Muiwawi stated.
“We intend to implement roadblocks to thoroughly screen individuals and their belongings upon entry into Mombasa, ensuring that no contraband substances are brought in, thus averting potential disasters,” he further explained.
Muiwawi made these remarks at the Makupa police station following the seizure of a significant amount of marijuana valued at Sh1.75 million. One suspect was apprehended and detained at the police station.
The haul of marijuana, cleverly disguised as dried fish, had been transported from Siaya county to Mombasa through a courier company.
Muiwawi credited the successful seizure to the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies, members of the public, and other stakeholders.
“We received information from concerned members of the public regarding a suspected consignment picked up by one of the intended recipients,” he explained. “Our officers acted on this intelligence, leading to the arrest of the suspect, who subsequently directed us to the location where the marijuana had been initially delivered.”
The seized narcotics consisted of 3,500 large rolls of marijuana concealed within 35 bales, with each bale containing 100 rolls.
