On Monday morning, March 18, 2024, President William Ruto is set to sign the Affordable Housing Bill into law at State House, Nairobi.
The move follows Parliament’s approval of the legislation last Thursday, which aims to establish the framework for the affordable housing program.
Despite facing strong opposition from Azimio lawmakers, the controversial Bill successfully passed through Parliament.
Once enacted, Kenyans will be required to pay the mandatory housing levy starting this month.
The levy, set at 1.5 per cent of both the employer and employee’s income, will come into effect at the end of the month. Despite its abolition by the courts in January, the Kenya Kwanza administration swiftly sought to reinstate it through legislative means.
