Six Kenyans lost their lives on Friday morning in an attack believed to have been carried out by suspected Al-Shabaab militants in Dhobley town, near Garissa County on the Kenya-Somalia border.
The victims, who were traders, had crossed into Somalia to open their shops when gunmen, with covered faces and driving a probox, indiscriminately opened fire on them. Four individuals died on the spot, while two succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment at the hospital.
Garissa County Police Commander John Samburumo confirmed that the attackers fled the scene immediately after the 7:15 am incident. He urged Kenyan traders in the area to remain vigilant.
Meanwhile, Garrisa County Commissioner Mohamed Ramadhan stated that investigations are ongoing to determine the motive behind the attack. Although reports suggest that the victims may have been targeted due to their religious affiliation, authorities are yet to confirm this.
The county commissioner also mentioned that plans are underway to transport the bodies to Garrisa town for further processing. The incident is considered a cross-border issue and will be addressed accordingly by law enforcement agencies.
