Motorists traveling along the Mai Mahiu-Suswa/Narok highway have been advised to consider alternative routes due to the aftermath of heavy rainfall experienced on Sunday night.
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA) issued an alert, warning drivers to anticipate significant traffic congestion on the affected roads as they are presently impassable.
“The Kenya National Highways Authority would like to notify the public of the closure of Mai Mahiu – Narok Road,” read a statement released on Monday evening.
“This follows sudden siltation, coupled with heavy debris deposited on a section stretching over a kilometre this evening at Suswa area, about 27 kilometres from Mai Mahiu town towards Narok.”
The authority emphasized that the closure was essential to facilitate the clearance of the siltation and to mitigate potential hazards such as vehicles becoming trapped.
“The Authority advises motorists plying this route to use alternative routes including the main Nairobi – Nakuru Highway.”
In addition to road closures, the region experienced devastating floods that claimed the lives of 48 individuals.
The village of Kianduma bore the brunt of the disaster, with numerous residents reported missing.
According to Susan Kihika, Nakuru Governor, over 100 individuals have been hospitalized.
