President William Ruto has convened an urgent meeting of the National Security Council at State House Nairobi this evening following a Kenya Defence Forces’ helicopter crash this afternoon in Elgeyo-Marakwet County.
The ongoing National Security Council meeting consists of the President, his deputy Rigathi Gachagua, the Defence Minister Aden Duale, the Attorney General Justin Muturi, and the National Security Advisor Monica Juma.
Others in the meeting include the Director-General of the National Intelligence Services Noordin Haji, and the Inspector-General of Police Japheth Koome.
Also in the meeting is the Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and Interior CS Prof. Kithure Kindiki.
The Chief of Defence Forces is the other member who is supposed to be in the National Security Council but unfortunately, today’s meeting is about the crash that claimed his life.
The National Security Council is the highest decision-making organ in the country regarding matters security.
The meeting is happening at the same time the military top officials have also convened an emergency Defence Council meeting to to assess the situation following the helicopter crash and issue a statement to the country.
The helicopter that crashed is reported to have been carrying 12 people, including officers with the rank of General, when it crashed. Chief of Defense Forces General Francis Ogolla was among the occupants of the ill-fated crash.
The military is yet to issue an official statement and confirmation of those onboard the ill-fated crash.
