Chaos in Kisii as ODM, UDA legislators trade barbs in church

Chaos erupted on Sunday at a church event in Kisii, disrupting a planned fundraiser for hours.

Tension escalated as a tear gas canister was lobbed at the pulpit, causing scores of worshipers to run helter-skelter around the swampy Etono grounds in Bomachoge Borabu before calm was restored.

The chaos forced the presiding cleric to engage in dramatic chants to ward off the “dark cloud” hanging over the event.

The fundraiser had brought together five PAG churches in the Etono area, attended by six MPs from across the political divide.

South Mugirango MP and Chief Whip Sylvanus Osoro presided over the fundraiser.

ODM MPs Obadiah Barongo and Kitutu Chache South MP Anthony Kibagendi were also in attendance, along with MPs Japhet Nyakundi (Kitutu Chache North), Alfa Miruka (Bomachoge Chache), Patrick Osero (Borabu), and several pro-UDA ward reps.

Tensions rose when Kibagendi took to the podium, and pockets of youths among the congregants started jeering at him. At one point, the microphone he was using was snatched away as youths chased him off the podium, deeper into the dias where other MPs were sitting.

As the chaos threatened to get out of control, a police officer unleashed a tear gas canister, causing attendees to scatter in all directions.
