The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has issued a public warning, stating that heavy rains have made several roads in Nairobi and Kiambu partially impassable.
According to KURA, the ongoing heavy rains have severely affected roads in both counties, leading to partial closures. Notably, Enterprise Road, Eastern Bypass, and Thika Bypass have been heavily impacted.
“We have observed significant road damage due to the heavy rains experienced last night across Nairobi and Kiambu Counties, resulting in partial closures,” stated KURA.
To mitigate traffic disruptions and ensure motorists’ safety, both traffic police and technical teams are actively managing affected areas.
KURA has assured the public that they will continue to provide updates as the situation evolves.
In light of the hazardous conditions, the authority has urged motorists to drive cautiously and avoid attempting to cross flooded sections.
The effects of the heavy rains were particularly evident along Thika Road on Wednesday morning, with flooding occurring at Kenyatta University and Juja, causing many people to be stranded.
Traffic flow along the Thika Super Highway was disrupted as a section of the road was submerged, especially the Thika-bound underpass area near the Juja Flyover.
Motorists were forced to use the Service Lane to access the highway beyond the High Point, as the area around the Juja Police Station, including Traffic Police Offices, was also submerged.
Police took measures to prevent any potential tragedies by redirecting motorists away from affected areas. They also appealed to motorists to exercise caution when using the Juja Super Highway.
With the Thika-bound route cut off due to floods at Kahawa Sukari, motor vehicles heading from Nairobi towards Thika were redirected back to the Githurai roundabout.
Additionally, traffic officers were deployed to divert motorists towards alternative routes, such as Mwihoko Road to join the Eastern Bypass or 44 Road towards Kahawa West for access to Thika.
Heavy rains during the night also affected Githurai and Mwiki areas.
The rainfall persisted into Wednesday morning, exacerbating the situation.
The service lane from Kasarani towards Githurai, particularly at the Car Wash area, was among the areas affected by flooding.
