Kenya is set to receive 16 U.S.-manufactured helicopters and approximately 150 M1117 Armored Security Vehicles as part of a new agreement aimed at enhancing the country’s security operations and peacekeeping missions. This announcement comes following President William Ruto’s recent state visit to Washington, D.C., where President Joe Biden’s administration committed to this substantial military aid package.
According to a statement released by the White House on Thursday, the 16 helicopters will include eight Hueys, designed to bolster regional peace and security, and eight MD-500s, intended to enhance Kenya’s participation in peacekeeping missions. These aircraft are expected to arrive in Nairobi between late 2024 and 2025.
In addition to the helicopters, Kenya will also receive approximately 150 M1117 Armored Security Vehicles from the U.S. Excess Defense Article stocks, with delivery projected for September 2024.
The two nations have pledged to fortify their collaboration on counterterrorism by deepening their information-sharing efforts. As part of this initiative, Kenya is in the process of joining Operation Gallant Phoenix, a program that facilitates multinational cooperation in sharing terrorist-related information and using battlefield evidence in civilian criminal justice proceedings. This initiative aims to enhance the ability of both countries to protect their borders and citizens from terrorist threats.
Moreover, the U.S. and Kenya will continue to build on their longstanding tradition of military training and capacity building. In the summer of 2024, for the first time, the Kenya Defence Forces will have candidates starting courses at the U.S. Military Academy, the U.S. Naval Academy, and the U.S. Air Force Academy. This initiative underscores the ongoing commitment to developing military leadership and expertise in Kenya.
Additionally, the U.S. military currently has seven advisors in Kenya supporting Kenyan aviators. For the first time, the United States is providing a Strategic Logistics Advisor to Kenya’s Ministry of Defence to further enhance logistical capabilities and strategic planning.
This military aid and collaborative effort highlight a deepening defense relationship between Kenya and the United States, aimed at strengthening regional stability, counterterrorism efforts, and overall security infrastructure in Kenya. President William Ruto expressed his delight in welcoming this investment, marking it as a historic milestone for Kenya, Africa, and Australia.
