A flight attendant was apprehended for allegedly smuggling nearly one kilogram of gold from Muscat to Kannur, concealing it in her rectum, according to a source from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in India.
Acting on specific intelligence from DRI Cochin, DRI officers at Kannur International Airport intercepted the cabin crew member, Surabhi Khatun, a Kolkata native, upon her arrival from Muscat on May 28.
During a personal search, authorities recovered 960 grams of smuggled gold in compound form concealed in her rectum.
Following interrogation and the completion of necessary formalities, Khatun was produced before the jurisdictional magistrate and subsequently remanded to 14 days in the women’s prison in Kannur.
The DRI source noted that this incident marks the first known case in India where an airline crew member has been caught smuggling gold by concealing it in the rectum.
