A Kenyan police officer deployed in the U.N.-backed Multinational Security Mission in Haiti was injured on Tuesday during an operation in Kenscoff, southeast of the capital Port-au-Prince.
According to Jack Ombaka, the mission’s spokesperson, the unidentified officer was wounded in the Belot area and was immediately evacuated to Aspen Hospital, where he is currently in stable condition.
This incident comes less than a month after another Kenyan officer, Samuel Tompoi Kaetuai, was fatally shot by gangs on February 23 in the western Segur-Savien region during an operation in Pont Sonde. Kaetuai was the first Kenyan casualty of the mission, which began its deployment in June 2024. His body was repatriated to Kenya last Tuesday.
The Kenyan-led mission in Haiti, part of efforts to combat gang violence, continues to face significant security challenges as criminal groups intensify their attacks.
