A police post in Mwea-West, Kirinyaga County, has been shut down and six officers transferred due to unresolved rent arrears.
The officers had been living rent-free in a house provided by businessman Mwangi Thuita, who passed away in 2018. Following his death, his daughter, Irene Njeri, requested that the officers begin paying rent, but the arrears have since accumulated to over Ksh.2 million, leading the family to reclaim the property.
“Before my father died, he instructed the officers to start paying rent from 2018. The arrears have now exceeded Ksh.2 million, which is why we decided to reclaim our property and rent it out to others,” said Njeri.
Mwea-West Police Commander Rashid Ali confirmed the closure of the post, stating that residents will now be served by Rukanga Police Post, which is located four kilometers away.
