Parliament Buildings became the center of national attention on Tuesday, April 8, after two female MPs were filmed engaging in a physical fight in broad daylight and in full view of cameras and fellow legislators.
The altercation involved Umulkheir Harun, a nominated MP under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), and Falhada Iman, a representative at the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA). The dramatic scene unfolded within the Parliament precincts, drawing reactions from both bystanders and the public.
In a video circulating online, the two MPs can be heard shouting and hurling insults at each other, as several female colleagues try to intervene, albeit unsuccessfully. At one point, one MP is heard calling for help, while another pleads with onlookers to stop recording the chaos.
Eventually, Parliament’s Sergeant-at-Arms intervened, separating the two lawmakers, but the verbal exchange persisted even after they were pulled apart.
Following the incident, Umulkheir Harun issued a statement expressing deep remorse over what transpired.
“Today, an unfortunate incident occurred on the parliamentary grounds—a situation I deeply regret both as a Member of Parliament and as a mother,” she stated.
She confirmed that she has since filed a complaint with the relevant authorities and emphasized her commitment to respectful conduct:
“I sincerely regret this occurrence and want to emphasize that I do not endorse or encourage any form of misconduct.”
Umulkheir also framed the matter within her faith and public role, stating:
“I remain fully committed to upholding the respectful and dignified standards expected of our institution and myself, particularly as a Muslim woman.”
She concluded by urging for a more respectful political environment, acknowledging the high-pressure nature of politics but affirming that violence is never justified.
