Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen is set to appear before the Senate on Wednesday, June 11, to provide an update on ongoing investigations into the death of teacher and social media personality Albert Ojwang.
Murkomen will be responding to a range of security-related inquiries, but the death of Ojwang while in police custody at Central Police Station is expected to take center stage.
This marks the first time the CS will publicly address the circumstances surrounding Ojwang’s death, which occurred on Sunday, June 8, 2025.
Pressure has been mounting on Murkomen to offer clarity about the events leading up to Ojwang’s arrest at his rural home in Homa Bay County and his transfer to Nairobi on Friday, June 6.
On Monday, June 9, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja issued an initial statement indicating that Ojwang’ was found unconscious in a cell at Central Police Station and rushed to Mbagathi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Kanja further confirmed that disciplinary action had already been taken as investigations begin, noting that the officers who were on duty at the time, including the Officer Commanding Station (OCS), had been interdicted to allow investigations to proceed.
Murkomen’s appearance before the Senate is anticipated to shed more light on the controversial incident, which has sparked public outrage and calls for justice from civil society and the online community.
