Five tourists of Indian origin have been confirmed dead following a gruesome road accident at Gichaka village along the Nakuru–Ol Joro Orok road in Nyandarua County.
The tragic incident occurred as the group was traveling from the Maasai Mara to Nyahururu in a mini bus, which reportedly lost its brakes while descending a hill near the Ol Joro Orok area. The driver, while attempting to negotiate a corner near Uhuru Comprehensive School, lost control, causing the bus to plunge into a ditch and roll multiple times, eventually landing in a potato farm. The impact ripped off the roof of the vehicle.
According to Nyandarua County Police Commander Stella Cherono, five passengers died on the spot. Rescue operations were swiftly carried out, with the injured rushed to Nyahururu County and Referral Hospital, St. Benedict Hospital in Nyahururu, and some to facilities in Nakuru for emergency care.
As of now, 25 tourists have been accounted for. Emergency responders and medical personnel are continuing efforts to stabilize those with multiple injuries.
Investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the brake failure and assess whether the vehicle met safety standards for such a long-distance tour.
