A Ceska pistol with 15 bullets, reported missing for four days, has been found abandoned outside the gate of a retired police officer’s residence in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet County.
The firearm had been assigned on May 29 to a senior officer for official duties but went missing the following day. The officer initially claimed he was attacked by six armed individuals on May 30, who allegedly robbed him of the weapon before fleeing on a motorcycle. He failed to report the alleged incident promptly, raising suspicion.
In a strange turn of events, a colleague on terminal leave discovered the pistol, ammunition, and a mobile phone dumped in a bag outside his home on Monday morning, June 3.
Following inconsistencies in his statements and failure to return the weapon on time, the officer in question was arrested for negligence and for potentially filing a false report. He had first claimed the firearm was in his house, prompting an unsuccessful search by fellow officers.
Police regulations require officers to return issued firearms to the armoury daily or immediately after an assignment. Authorities are now conducting a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the loss and recovery of the firearm and whether there was any misconduct or cover-up.
The recovered weapon and items are being treated as key evidence.
