Police Constable James Mukhwana, attached to Central Police Station in Nairobi, has been arrested in connection with the murder of 31-year-old teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang.
The arrest was carried out by officers from the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) of the National Police Service and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA). Mukhwana is currently being held at Capitol Hill Police Station and is expected to be charged with murder, contrary to Section 203 as read with Section 204 of the Penal Code.
According to an official police report, the arrest followed investigations into the teacher’s death while in police custody.
“Please be informed that PC James Mukhwana of Central Police Station Nairobi was arrested today, 12/06/2025, and placed in custody at Capitol Hill Police Station by officers from IAU and IPOA. He is to be charged with the offence of murder contrary to Section 203 as read with Section 204 of the Penal Code following the death of one Albert Ojwang,” the report stated.
Ojwang was arrested by DCI officers in Homa Bay County over a controversial social media post and later transferred to Central Police Station in Nairobi. Within hours of his detention, he was rushed to Mbagathi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival at 2:00 a.m.
A hospital report described gruesome injuries, stating that Ojwang’s face was swollen, and his body and limbs were covered with bruises. Blood was oozing from his mouth, eyes, and the back of his head, where he had a visible cut in the parieto-occipital region. Medical officers found his body cold and unresponsive.
