Nairobi, Kenya – July 29, 2025 – The High Court has officially charged five suspects in the gruesome murder of Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Ongond’o Were, following a successful application by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to consolidate two separate murder cases previously filed in the Kibera and Milimani Law Courts.
Charges Consolidated Against Five Suspects
The consolidated case now brings together William Imoli Shigali (alias Imo), Edwin Odour Odhiambo (alias Machuani), Ebel Ochieng (alias Dave Calo), Isaac Kuria Chege (alias Kush), and Allan Omondi Ogola under a single file for the fatal shooting of the legislator.
The suspects allegedly ambushed and killed MP Were on April 30, 2025, near the City Mortuary Roundabout on Ngong Road, in Nairobi’s Kilimani area, at around 7:40 p.m.
Bail Hearings and Judicial Proceedings
Lady Justice Diana Kavedza approved the prosecution’s request to merge the files, streamlining the trial process. Shigali, Odour, and Ochieng had earlier denied the charges in Kibera, while Kuria and Omondi pleaded not guilty in Milimani.
Justice Kavedza has scheduled bond rulings for the first trio on August 14, 2025, while the remaining suspects will have their bail applications heard on September 22, 2025.
Autopsy Reveals Lethal Gunshot Wounds
An autopsy conducted at Lee Funeral Home by government pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor confirmed the MP succumbed to five gunshot wounds, which caused extensive internal injuries. “The nature and extent of the injuries made survival impossible,” said Dr. Oduor during a press briefing.
The post-mortem was witnessed by the MP’s family lawyers, Apollo Mboya and Peter Kopere, and top officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), led by Head of Homicide Martin Nyuguto.
DCI Uncovers Premeditated Plot
Preliminary investigations by DCI detectives point to a well-coordinated and premeditated hit. Surveillance footage, mobile phone triangulation, and eyewitness statements suggest the MP was trailed from Parliament by both a car and a motorcycle before being shot.
As part of the ongoing investigation, DCI officers have arrested several individuals and recovered key pieces of evidence. This includes:
- Live ammunition and spent cartridges
- Two motor vehicles believed to have been used in the ambush
- USD 4,800 in cash from one suspect’s residence
- Nine live rounds and eight undocumented teargas canisters
The seized vehicles have been submitted for forensic analysis, including DNA testing, to link the suspects to the crime scene..
