Narok County – Thursday, July 24, 2025: President William Ruto has officially launched the 2025 Wildebeest Migration season in the Maasai Mara National Reserve. The event comes days after the migration was recognized by the World Book of Records UK as the World’s Greatest Annual Terrestrial Wildlife Migration.

The launch was held on Thursday morning in Narok County. It highlighted Kenya’s push to grow its tourism sector through wildlife and natural heritage.

“The Maasai Mara remains one of the most breathtaking natural wonders on Earth,” said President Ruto. “We are proud to share this extraordinary migration with the world.”

Kenya’s Migration Now World-Record Holder

The Great Wildebeest Migration involves over 1.5 million wildebeests, zebras, and antelopes. The animals travel from Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park to Maasai Mara each year.

According to the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), the migration typically takes place between July and October. It draws hundreds of thousands of tourists to Kenya annually.

Tourism Numbers Up 15% in 2024

President Ruto also announced a 15% growth in international arrivals last year. The increase reflects effective marketing and investment in tourist infrastructure.

“We are confident that our tourism numbers will continue rising,” he said. “We’re investing in world-class experiences for both local and international visitors.”

According to the Tourism Research Institute, Kenya welcomed over 1.9 million tourists in 2024. Wildlife safaris, beach holidays, and cultural tours remain the top attractions.

Locals Encouraged to Tour the Country

The President urged Kenyans to travel within the country and experience its beauty.

“We ask Kenyans to visit the Mara. Travel and enjoy what the world pays to see,” he said.

The Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife and Magical Kenya have stepped up campaigns to boost local tourism. The goal is to make Kenya a year-round destination.

Conservation Key to Sustainable Tourism

Ruto emphasized the need to protect Kenya’s wildlife. He highlighted ongoing government investments in conservation, anti-poaching, and ranger support.

Maasai Mara Game Reserve benefits from local partnerships and revenue-sharing with communities. These models support both wildlife and residents.
