A 57-year-old suspected drug trafficker was arrested over the weekend after attempting to smuggle 41.7 kilograms of cannabis through Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), according to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
Suspect Escapes Luggage Check, Leaves Cannabis Behind
The man, who had just landed in Nairobi from Bangkok, Thailand, cleared immigration checks without raising suspicion. However, customs officers flagged his luggage during standard screening.
According to the DCI, the suspect panicked and fled the baggage inspection area, leaving behind two suspicious suitcases. Anti-Narcotics Unit detectives were called in and, upon inspecting the abandoned bags, discovered 41 sachets of cannabis sativa, weighing a total of 41.7 kilograms.
Manhunt Launched, Suspect Found in South C Hotel
Following the discovery, detectives launched a swift manhunt. Using surveillance and intelligence leads, the suspect was tracked to a hotel in Nairobi’s South C estate, where he had checked in shortly after his escape from JKIA.
He was arrested without incident and transported to JKIA Police Station, where he remains in custody.
Charges Pending in JKIA Cannabis Smuggling Case
The suspect is expected to be arraigned in court on drug trafficking charges. Authorities confirmed on Sunday that investigations are ongoing to determine if he is part of a larger drug trafficking syndicate.
DCI officials emphasized that JKIA has remained a key focus point in Kenya’s fight against international drug smuggling. The airport has seen a string of drug-related arrests in recent months, as law enforcement agencies tighten their grip on illegal narcotics routes.
“This arrest highlights the vigilance of our security teams at JKIA and our continued commitment to eliminating drug trafficking in Kenya,” said an official with the Anti-Narcotics Unit.
