Chelsea have agreed a £40 million fee to sign Manchester United forward Alejandro Garnacho, bringing an end to weeks of speculation over the Argentine’s future.
The 21-year-old winger, told by United boss Ruben Amorim to find a new club after last season, becomes Chelsea’s latest attacking addition under manager Enzo Maresca. The deal includes a 10% sell-on clause, making it United’s fourth biggest sale after Cristiano Ronaldo, Romelu Lukaku and Angel Di Maria.
Chelsea had opened talks with a £25m offer in January, but United initially valued Garnacho at £60m.
Patience from the London club, combined with their busy summer sales drive, eventually saw the price settled at £40m — considered a bargain by many insiders.
Since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital’s takeover, Chelsea have spent more than £500m on wingers alone. With strikers included, the total rises beyond £650m, though the Blues have offset this with record player sales.
The imminent £32m departure of Christopher Nkunku to AC Milan and Nicolas Jackson’s proposed loan move to Bayern Munich are part of a wider clear-out designed to balance the books under UEFA’s financial rules.
For Garnacho, the move offers a fresh start after a difficult spell at Old Trafford. Despite being highly rated when he broke into United’s first team in 2022, he often found himself criticised for wastefulness in front of goal.
Last season, he scored just six times in 36 Premier League games, converting only two of 16 clear chances — one of the worst records in the division.
Still, Garnacho has made 144 senior appearances and is known for his relentless pressing and ability to win the ball high up the pitch. Chelsea hope he will provide competition on the left wing alongside summer arrival Jamie Gittens.
Enzo Maresca had pushed for both a new centre-back and a wide forward, but the club’s board only approved the latter. Garnacho’s arrival therefore fills a key tactical gap and strengthens an attack already rich with talent.
Meanwhile at United, the rebuild continues. The club has already spent £200m on a new frontline featuring Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.
Other exits are also in motion: Tyrell Malacia is set to join Elche on loan, while Rasmus Hojlund is closing in on a temporary switch to Napoli.
