The 2025–26 UEFA Champions League enters its second season under the new 36-team “league phase” format, and it promises to deliver a thrilling ride.
The draw in Monaco on August 28 has set up high-stakes showdowns — especially for the six English entrants.
Format Refresher: A New Era of Elite Competition
Gone are the days of eight groups of four. Instead, all 36 teams are placed into a single, expanded league table.
Each club plays eight matches — four at home and four away — against eight different opponents, drawn from four seeding pots. Clubs face two teams from each pot, one home and one away.
The top eight advance directly to the Round of 16. Clubs finishing 9th to 24th enter a two-legged playoff in February for a place in the last 16.
Those in 25th to 36th are eliminated outright, with no pathway to the Europa League.
UEFA is also planning to boost fairness in the knockouts by granting home advantage in the second leg to higher-ranked teams—and if a lower-ranked club eliminates a top seed, they inherit that seed’s advantage in later rounds.
English Clubs Drawn Into Blockbuster Schedules
For the first time, six Premier League sides will compete in the Champions League — Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Newcastle United, and Tottenham.
Here’s how the draw panned out:
- Liverpool will face Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, and Inter Milan, plus Eintracht Frankfurt — guaranteeing a mix of Spanish and Italian challenges.
- Manchester City has drawn Real Madrid, Napoli, Borussia Dortmund, and Bayer Leverkusen — featuring a reunion for Kevin De Bruyne at the Etihad.
- Tottenham and Newcastle share the tough burden of drawing Paris Saint-Germain. Spurs also face Dortmund and Monaco, while Newcastle joins them in facing PSG, and also draws Barcelona, Benfica, and Leverkusen.
- Chelsea’s group includes Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Napoli — plus a twist of familiarity with former star David Luiz, now with Pafos, facing his old club.
- Arsenal’s fixtures: Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid, Club Brugge, Olympiacos, Slavia Prague, Kairat Almaty, and Athletic Bilbao.
What Lies Ahead: Key Dates & Stakes
- The league phase kicks off from 16 September and runs through 28 January 2026.
- Knockout playoffs (for places 9–24) begin in February, with direct Round of 16 spots already reserved for the top eight.
