Mumias, Kakamega County
Deputy Party Leader of the Democratic Congress Party (DCP), Cleophas Malala, is facing criminal prosecution after an unauthorized helicopter landing disrupted the national secondary school games finals at the Mumias Sports Complex.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Malala’s chopper landed abruptly at halftime during a tense match between Musingu High School and St. Joseph’s Kitale, causing panic and disruption among thousands of students, teachers, and education stakeholders.
Malala Summoned by DCI Over Reckless Act
Western Region Police Commander Issa Muhamoud confirmed that Malala and the helicopter pilot have both been summoned and will be charged with several serious offences, including:
- Endangering public safety
- Trespassing
- Creating a public nuisance
- Violating aviation and education regulations
“This was neither an emergency nor an accident,” said Muhamoud. “It was a blatant violation of civil aviation laws and the Basic Education Act.”
Public Safety at Risk
Authorities described the landing as “reckless, irresponsible, and a national embarrassment,” accusing Malala of prioritising political showmanship over student safety.
“The safety of children is non-negotiable,” said Commander Muhamoud.
“We will not tolerate impunity that endangers the lives of our young people.”
He added that the helicopter stunt risked triggering a fatal stampede, given the size and vulnerability of the crowd present at the school event.
Political Fallout and Legal Consequences
Malala, a former Kakamega Senator and close ally of top political figures, has remained tight-lipped amid mounting criticism. The incident has ignited nationwide debate about abuse of power and disregard for safety protocols in public spaces.
