Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested two women after they were found in possession of USD 560,000 (approximately Ksh70 million) in counterfeit currency during an operation in Nairobi’s Upper Hill area.
The suspects, identified as Ifrah Ali Jeyte and Qamar Salat Abdi, were apprehended by detectives from the DCI Nairobi Regional Office in a well-coordinated operation.
According to a statement issued by the DCI, officers discovered numerous bundles of USD 100 notes hidden inside a handbag belonging to the suspects.
“Detectives have apprehended two women in possession of substantial quantities of counterfeit US dollars,” the DCI confirmed.
The fake notes were later counted at the DCI Nairobi Area Headquarters, where it was established that the counterfeit stash amounted to USD 560,000, equivalent to about Ksh70 million.
The two suspects are currently being processed and will be arraigned in court.
Kenya has faced an upsurge in counterfeit money cases in recent years, with the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) and law enforcement agencies urging the public to remain vigilant.
Possession or circulation of fake currency is a serious criminal offense under the Kenyan Penal Code.
