Makueni County, Kenya – August 27, 2025 —A former Cabinet Minister from Makueni County, once a powerful figure in the Moi-era government, now faces extreme poverty after his second wife abandoned him.
The ex-minister, who once allied with the late political kingmaker Nicholas Biwott, has lost his lavish homes in Karen and Mua Hills due to eviction.
His glamorous second wife, whom he married after divorcing his first spouse, allegedly threw him out, leaving him without shelter or financial support.
Divorce and Family Rift
The politician divorced his first wife, a medical professional, in 2002. After being forced out, she built her own home in Kitengela, where she raised their grown-up children. His children sided with their mother, deepening his isolation.
Today, the once-burly leader reportedly survives from hand to mouth. Sources close to him say he often struggles to afford basic meals.
Political Fallout and Betrayals
The former minister’s political career collapsed after he clashed with Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
Without strong alliances, his ambitions for a political comeback quickly faded. His story illustrates the fragile nature of Kenyan politics, where loyalty often shifts overnight and former allies turn into rivals.
A Cautionary Tale for Kenyan Politicians
The minister’s downfall mirrors the fate of several other powerful figures from the Moi era who once enjoyed wealth, influence, and deep connections but later ended up in despair.
President Daniel arap Moi, enjoyed absolute power. The former dictator used divide and rule techniques to reward and punish friends and foe. He created several power bases to put his detractors in check.
Most of these men would have walked naked to prove they were more loyal to the President and the ruling party than their rivals.
In their excessive loyalty shows and contests they destroyed the careers of others. Kariuki Chotara, Shariff Nassir, Joseph Kamotho, Justus Ole Tipis, Ezekiel Bargetuny, Mulu Mutisyia, David Okiki Amayo and Hezekiah Oyugi emerged as powerful figures in the Moi era.
Most of them died poor or desolate.
