Istanbul, Turkey – Friday, August 29, 2025 — Turkish giants Fenerbahçe have sacked Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho, just two days after their elimination from the UEFA Champions League playoffs by Benfica.
Mourinho’s Exit Confirmed
In an official statement, the Istanbul club announced the end of his tenure.
“We have parted ways with Jose Mourinho, who served as head coach of our professional A team since the 2024–2025 season. We thank him for his efforts and wish him success in his future career,” Fenerbahçe said.
Mourinho, 62, joined the Yellow Canaries in June 2024. Despite high expectations, he failed to deliver a league title, finishing second behind Galatasaray last season.
Turbulent Tenure in Turkey
The former Chelsea, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, and AS Roma coach experienced several controversies during his stay in Istanbul.
- In April 2025, Mourinho grabbed the face of Okan Buruk, Galatasaray’s coach, after a heated Turkish Cup quarterfinal defeat.
- He later mocked Buruk by tweaking his nose, an incident that drew widespread criticism.
- Mourinho was also fined after accusing referees of bias in another fiery Istanbul derby. His remarks were labeled “contrary to sporting ethics” by the Turkish Football Federation.
Struggles and Setbacks
While Mourinho initially raised Fenerbahçe’s hopes of ending their league title drought, his side faltered in key matches. The Champions League playoff loss to Benfica sealed his fate, as elimination denied the club both prestige and millions in revenue.
Despite some progress, including improved performances in the Turkish Cup, Mourinho’s failure to dethrone Galatasaray and his disciplinary issues overshadowed his achievements.
What’s Next for Fenerbahçe and Mourinho?
Fenerbahçe are now searching for a new manager as they aim to challenge Galatasaray for the Süper Lig crown. Several names, including Ruben Amorim and Abdullah Avcı, have already been linked to the role.
As for Mourinho, speculation has begun about his next destination. Known as the “Special One,” he may attract interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia’s Pro League or even a possible return to the Premier League.
